Gabrielle Roth, an incredibly influential teacher of meditative dance and the creator of the 5Rhythms movement practice, passed away Monday, October 22, 2012. She dedicated her life, heart and soul to exploring how to engage her spirit and creativity through dance and movement -- and helping others to do the same. Our conversations, and our world would simply not be the same without having had her presence in our lives.

Kathy Altman Kathy Altman -
While highly trained in many forms of dance, it wasn't until Kathy's catalytic meeting with Gabrielle 30 years ago that her true callingfound her. As Co-Director of The Moving Center School, Kathy was the first person asked to help Gabrielle bring her work out into the world. Over the past 20 years Kathy's teaching has brought thousands of people back to the joy of their own, original movement.

Lori SaltzmanLori Saltzman - Since stumbling into a 5Rhythms workshop 25 years ago, Lori's full-time devotion has been helping people to recover the spirited dance they left behind or discover the dancer they never met. Co-Director of The Moving Center School, Lori¹s natural persistence and humor coaxes even the most reluctant people to let themselves move, shed tired old patterns that don¹t work anymore, and glimpse themselves with clear yet compassionate eyes.

Moving Meditation - Mary - 5 Rhythms classes for all ages Nevada City, Grass Valley, CAFrom the beginnings of recorded history people danced for the purpose of worship and healing. In ancient times our ancestors saw nature and all life as an expression of God. To duplicate or mimic nature through movement and sound was their first and highest way to connect with spirit, and was the origin of dance.

Moving Meditation and Ecstatic Dance are free-form healing practices that unite the mind, body and spirit, while promoting spiritual awakenings, mental clarity, physical stamina and emotional well-being. These movement forms provide a powerful catalyst for personal and collective transformation by raising awareness. This expanded perspective leads to a greater range of choice and assists us in going beyond our habitual patterns and limiting thoughts.

Walking into a movement studio for the first time can be a frightening experience. It takes emotional courage to come into the seeming madness of 50-60 people moving in a myriad of different ways. There are no steps to follow and minimal instruction – no talking, respect others personal space and move with whatever thoughts, feelings or sensations arise – this is not a spectator sport!

After a period of stretching and moving to the eclectic and captivating warm-up music, a short period of instruction or intention is presented, depending on the movement modality. This guidance helps people to get in touch with their breath, body, sensations, emotions and mental presence. Specific music is selected to assist people in deepening their experience of themselves, their relationship to others and the community of dancers. In this practice we turn suffering into art and art into awareness. More about the dances...
